Each year certain food items are targeted for particular scorn, sometimes with merit, but often with little scientific backing.

This year’s comeback, according to a new study, is carbs. Many eating fads derided gluten and grains as evil, but medical professionals and science have put carbs back on the menu. The rising popularity of plant-based eating, and including nutrient-packed carbs like quinoa and bulgur wheat, is behind a carb rebirth.

Cutting out carbs is no longer seen as de rigueur. Ross Anderson, Head Chef at Waitrose Cookery School, said: “Faddy diets are definitely going out of fashion – people are more aware of how to eat more healthily.”
